Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of The Competence Institute podcast. I'm your host, Ryan, and today I have with me Mike, co-founder and our resident expert on study technology.

Mike:

Hi Ryan! It's great to be back here to discuss something that's a very important cornerstone of our mission at The Competence Institute.

Ryan:

Absolutely, Mike. Our mission is to help people by empowering them with the tools and guidance they need to fill in the gaps in their education, cultivate future studies, and enhance their capacity to envision and create their own prosperous future.

Mike:

Right. And today we're diving deep into a topic that is crucial to fulfilling that mission: understanding the role of the misunderstood word in education.

Ryan:

That's right. Now, many of our listeners might be wondering what exactly we mean by the misunderstood word. Could you start us off by shedding some light on this, Mike?

Mike:

Certainly, Ryan. In the realm of education, the misunderstood word is essentially a concept where an individual encounters a word or phrase that they don't fully understand as it is being used in the particular text, oral instruction or whatever, and this can be a significant barrier to their learning process. It's actually recognized as the most important barrier to study, as discovered by author and educator L. Ron Hubbard.

Ryan:

And this is something that happens to all of us, isn't it? I mean, sometimes you read a word you don't understand and you might skip it, but then later you find yourself losing track of what you were reading.

Mike:

Exactly, Ryan, and that's where the problem begins. A misunderstood word can not only hinder the comprehension of the topic at hand, but can also result in a lack of interest or confusion surrounding the entire subject. And there are many ways a word can be not fully understood. But they basically break down to which of the many separate definitions a word can have (some words can have as many as 35!) that is being used in the material, and the role the word has in relationship to the other words, which we call the part of speech. The methods used to instruct children these days in the parts of speech are faulty at best and actually are booby-trapped to halt further learning. And remember: this applies to reading books, receiving oral instruction from a teacher or a boss, private music lessons, on-the-job training or anything.

Ryan:

That sounds like a chain reaction that we really want to avoid, especially since our goal at The Competence Institute is to nurture an environment where learning is smooth and enjoyable.

Mike:

Absolutely, and that's why we emphasize the importance of recognizing when you've encountered a misunderstood word and taking the time to clarify its meaning. It's like putting together a puzzle. Each word is a piece that helps create a complete picture of the knowledge being conveyed.

Ryan:

I love that analogy, Mike, and I suppose in this context, our role is to help learners find those missing puzzle pieces and put them back in the right place.

Mike:

Absolutely. It's also important to understand that it's perfectly okay to not know the meaning of a word. What's crucial is to have the willingness to pause, look it up and grasp its essence before moving forward. And one particularly important part of the essence of a word is, of course, how to say it properly, in other words, the pronunciation. Now, some words can have a couple of acceptable versions, you know, like, you say tomato, I say tomato. But most words have one very specific, exact pronunciation, and there is no easier way to embarrass yourself than to be caught pronouncing words incorrectly, particularly when you are addressing a group of people and you're supposed to know what you're talking about. Lawyers, doctors, engineers, professional actors and actresses all need to become professionals at speaking correctly. This literally applies to moving up to professional standards in any field.

Ryan:

Right, because this isn't just about preventing confusion, it's about empowering learners to build a strong foundation of knowledge so they can become a competent professional in whatever field they want to go into. Now, Mike, could you tell us about how The Competence Institute integrates this understanding of the misunderstood word in its programs?

Mike:

Certainly, Ryan. In our programs, we incorporate strategies to help students identify misunderstood words promptly. We encourage them to actively engage with the material by making notes, asking questions and using resources to explore the meanings of words they don't understand.

Ryan:

And I suppose technology plays a huge role in facilitating this, doesn't it?

Mike:

Absolutely, Ryan. With the advent of technology, it has become significantly easier to find the meanings of words instantly. We are also working on integrating AI tools that can proactively identify potentially misunderstood words and provide definitions or explanations in real time.

Ryan:

That sounds fantastic! It seems like a step towards fostering an educational environment where everyone can thrive, irrespective of their current knowledge base.

Mike:

Absolutely, and by doing this we aim to foster a culture of curiosity and a love for learning which directly aligns with our mission at The Competence Institute.
